8 Responses to 5 Reasons NOT to find out the gender of your baby!

  1. Loved this article. So true. Also on my third without finding out the gender. Thanks for representing the other side!

  2. I’m solidly in the don’t-find-out camp. We didn’t find out with our first, but we did with our second. And honestly, it was much better waiting to find out. No random ultrasound technician telling me my baby’s gender can replace hearing my husband’s shaky, tear-filled voice say in the delivery room, “You got your girl.” I also think there are seriously good reasons you should keep your baby’s name a secret, too.

    • Yes!! There is nothing like that delivery room moment. I thought by #3 it would be a little less exciting, especially since we already have a boy and a girl, but it was still just as amazing.

  3. My babies are 50 & 52. We certainly did not have that option. My husband was not allowed in the delivery room either, tho, I think that is a biggie for both of you to be there. I asked but was denied. My daughter knew in advance what her 4 babies were & I was (secretly) annoyed about that. lol

  4. I’m right there with you. Child #1 girl, child #2 boy, and baby #3 still a mystery. I didn’t find out with either and I loved/love not knowing. While pregnant with all 3 I knew I had a baby growing inside. I had time to plan for general ideas and dreams I wanted for my child, mainly a healthy baby. I focused more on how my parenting style would be (1st-time mom, mom to a 2-year-old and newborn, mom of a 7, 5 and newborn-stay at home mom).

My 1st midwife told my mom, sister, husband and myself in the delivery room that parents who find out start to create personalities and identities for their child. They get consumed with the stereotypes of what a girl or boy should be like. I think not finding out allowed me to connect more with my baby because then I don’t have preconceived notions of what I think my baby should be. I love my children for who they are and they will become.

Great article and thank you for sharing

  5. I’m the total opposite and had to know as soon as possible. I love hearing your reasoning for not finding out during the pregnancy, I had never thought about those. I’m currently pregnant with our third boy. I always wanted a daughter so I wanted to get any feelings of sadness done early before anyone knew the gender or pregnancy. People can say really nasty things (example: aren’t you sad you’ll never get to have a mother-daughter bond?) and I wanted time to get myself happy about each boy so I could confidently say, no, I’m just excited to meet our baby boy. If we had one of each, I’d love to wait until birth To find out because I’d already have his or her clothes ready! Thanks for sharing!

  6. Thank you for this! My brother in law told me the other day that babies are expensive and we don’t understand how much of a “burden” it’s going to be to have to “update” the nursery after baby is born. He also said I don’t understand how much work babies are after they’re born and how much more stressful not knowing the gender will make the entire process. I was so upset when he was shouting these things at me, but it still doesn’t change our mind. Thank you for justifying and validating our exact reasons for not wanting to find out the gender ahead of time. I, too, am a planner, so I get offended when people tell me they couldn’t do it because they’re a planner. I think our birth will be so special to us. Thanks for the great tips!

I freely admit that I am not always the most creative or original person when it comes to crafting, decorating, organizing, cooking, etc...but I love being inspired by great ideas and putting my own spin on them! Look around, stay a while, and I hope through my *unoriginality* I can provide some inspiration to you, too!
